It is only week 3 of the term and already we have had several sanctioned events take place.  As always, the year started with a splash with The All-Stars Zonal Secondary School Open Water Swimming Championships in Wellington.  This was followed by the NZSS Beach Volleyball Championships at Mount Maunganui and most recently the iconic NZSS Kathmandu Coast to Coast. 

Schools are gearing up for Summer Tournament Week which takes place from Saturday 16th March through to Sunday 24th March with 43 events across the motu.   We are looking forward to having a couple of new events. Due to the success and growing popularity of 3x3, Basketball NZ have created three regional opportunities for the sport, culminating in a final series during the April school holidays. Senior Event Manager, Jay McDonald said “With the growth in playing numbers witnessed in 3x3 for 2023, BBNZ chose to create 3 regional 3x3 tournaments across the country. These are designed to encourage more schools to have the opportunity to enter a 3x3 tournament through more accessible locations, and to create a true qualification pathway to the 3x3 Secondary Schools Nationals. Through this we are hoping to achieve increased 3x3 playing numbers and greater exposure to the game from students across the country”. 

We also are very excited to stage the North Island Secondary School Mountain Bike Championships as part of the Crankworx Summer Event Series for the very first time in Rotorua.  Chief Executive, Ari Tibble is looking forward to hosting this additional and said "School Sport is the beating heart of sport in NZ and we are so excited to be hosting, in collaboration with our mates at the Rotorua Mountain Bike Club North Island Schools MTB Championships on the 17, 18 and 19 of March. In addition to experiencing the scale of Crankworx, students entered in at least one of the events will also receive complimentary General Admission to all days of the Skyline portion of Crankworx Rotorua from Wednesday 20th to Sunday 24th March 2024."
