100 Years of NZ Olympians Wearing the Silver FernKia ora, August 14th, 2020, marks 100 years to the day that New Zealand athletes first wore the Silver Fern at the Olympic Games. These Olympics were in Antwerp in Belgium just two years after the horrors of WW1, so a Games with great significance! New Zealand sent four athletes, including 15 year-old swimmer, Violet Waldron, and rower Darcy Hadfield, who had been badly wounded in WW1 yet still won a bronze medal. One of several things the New Zealand Olympic Committee is doing to celebrate this occasion is producing a set of 10 commemorative posters, one covering each decade. These will highlight the key moments of our proud 100-year Olympic history of wearing the Silver Fern. The posters will be A2 size, so quite big, and will be a wonderful addition to, and resource for, any teaching and learning on the Olympic Games, whether around the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 or further in the future. The NZOC has 200 sets of posters to give away free to schools. We realise that this number probably won’t meet demand so only one set per school please, and we will try to make sure all regions get roughly their fair share of the posters available. Our apologies in advance however if your school does not receive a set due to demand. To request a set of commemorative posters for your school, please fill out the request form at this link before Friday July 31st. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HVXNGRV Ngā mihi, Education Team, NZOC |
