While senior students across Aotearoa settle into exam rooms, their younger peers are gearing up for something equally significant — Junior Tournament Week, running from 17–21 November. This annual celebration offers Year 9 and 10 students a chance to represent their schools, build friendships, and immerse themselves in the sports they love.
With over 4,000 students expected to take part across the motu, the week promises to be a vibrant showcase of traditional summer codes, regional pride, and youthful energy.
Volleyball continues to be a crowd favourite, with Invercargill proudly hosting the South Island Secondary Schools (SISS) event. Meanwhile, Pulman Arena in South Auckland will welcome more than 70 teams for the North Island Secondary Schools (NISS) Cup — a testament to the sport’s enduring popularity. Due to overwhelming demand, a satellite tournament in Porirua has also been added to the calendar, ensuring more students can take part.
Water Polo will make a splash with North Island competition in Auckland and South Island action in Blenheim, giving young athletes a chance to test their skills in high-energy aquatic battles.
The successful introduction of 3x3 Basketball in 2024 has paved the way for even greater participation in 2025, with regional tournaments set for Mt Maunganui, Lower Hutt, and Rolleston. Fast-paced and dynamic, this format continues to grow in popularity among junior players.
Junior Canoe Polo, another standout from last year, returns with competition hosted in Hastings, offering a thrilling mix of strategy, teamwork, and water-based fun.
Beyond the scores and medals, Junior Tournament Week is about connection — forging new friendships, strengthening school spirit, and celebrating the joy of sport. It’s a week where rangatahi come together, not just to compete, but to grow, learn, and create memories that will last well beyond the final whistle.
Whether courtside, poolside, or cheering from the sidelines, this week is a reminder of the power of sport to unite, inspire, and uplift.
