What I know now - A SSNZ Podcast series

School Sport NZ is proud to present its very first podcast series. Looking to promote the value of sport, we have been fortunate to pull together some of the best names in sport, politics, and media to talk about their experiences of school sport and how its benefited their lives.

Here are a few of the amazing quotes from the series:

  • Being active is just so important as a young kid growing up; any way, shape or form that may be. I think for me it’s the connections and the friendships I’ve built.” Amelia Kerr

  • What I felt like I really benefited from is, like awareness. The little cues that people get off when they’re under the pump. Or the little cues when someone says yes but they really mean no. I don’t think I would have learned that if I hadn’t been in a team.” Laura Langman

  • "I truly believe that (sport) adds to your character in all other areas of your life. You learn to win, you learn to lose, you learn to come together with other people that aren’t necessarily the same personality as you, and you learn how to deal with that. You learn to deal with things that don’t go your way" Toni Street

  •  “The role of sport in helping build really strong, resilient people who, yeah some of them might go on and represent New Zealand, but actually what we want them to do is be part of teams, part of communities and have a sense of belonging. And that’s absolutely what sport, and team sport, gives you.” Louisa Wall

  •  “It’s the social side that I used to love the most and that’s probably what kept me in rugby the most. Because I love the social side, I love being in a team, I love the Saturday after beers at the club and that side of things. I’d hate for people to miss out on that just because they missed a professional contract.” Brad Webber

  •  “I get a little bit frustrated when I hear kids having to specialise at young ages. I think it’s just stupid. I played rugby, cricket, hockey and athletics through school, and I even played rugby cricket and athletics after school for a few years.” Tom Walsh

  • “I would describe a couple of coaches that had mana, certainly in rugby, and I felt that was important. When that real care for the people shone through then all of a sudden you’d create an environment where people could express themselves and play and enjoy it.” Kane Williamson
