Summer Tournament Week 2021 update

With Summer Tournament just over one week away, many schools are anxiously awaiting further updates to the Alert level status of Aotearoa to provide confidence in attending the many events set to take place across the country from the 20th March.

Event providers have been assessing their ability to deliver events under the various scenarios that a nationwide Alert Level 2 brings, but also the complex scenarios surrounding certain regions being at a higher alert level than others.

I would like to thank all of our event partners for their hard work and for the difficult decisions they are having to make against the backdrop of a health response to a global pandemic. Nothing has been placed in the too hard basket and is heartening to see so many events able to continue safely under Alert Level 2 protocols.

Schools are encouraged to visit the School Sport NZ website regularly to receive the latest updates in relation to Summer Tournament Week events. Individual events are also updated on the calendar as soon as we have received them with schools having the ability to opt into receiving updates from specific events where applicable.

I would like to thank the principals from across the country that took the time to provide feedback into our survey this week. 80% of principals surveyed indicated that they will send teams to events under alert level 2 protocols where the event can be run safely.

Like you we are hoping for positive news from the Government today and a shift to a nationwide Alert Level 1 scenario.

Student Leadership Opportunity – nominate your sport leaders!

Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to recognise and promote your sporting leaders!

School Sport NZ are seeking suitable applicants for the inaugural School Sport NZ Student Athlete Commission (SAC). Student voice is a key component in ensuring our offerings are relevant and the SAC is an opportunity for your talented young leaders to contribute to delivering positive experiences in school sport.

The SAC will provide an authentic channel for participant input into the design and delivery of school sport opportunities and to inform change and development in school sport. The SAC builds on student leadership involvement at regional and other levels in developing the knowledge, skill sets, experience and passion of young people in sport leadership. SAC members will, as student ambassadors, represent School Sport NZ at events and contribute student athlete voice to the wider sport sector where appropriate.

Criteria for nomination. To be eligible for nomination, students must be;

  • Enrolled fulltime at a School Sport NZ member school in years 11, 12 or 13 and
  • Nominated by their school principal, a Regional Sports Director (RSD) or a National Sports Organisation (NSO) and
  • Actively involved in a regional and/or national school or NSO leadership initiative or programme.

The SAC will comprise up to 10 student athletes at any one time and the term of membership will be 2 years or until the member leaves school, whichever occurs first. SAC members may seek reappointment for one further term provided they meet the criteria above. Initially the SAC members will be selected from nominations by an Appointments Committee comprising the School Sport NZ CEO, 2 members of the School Sport NZ board and 2 RSDs. From March 2022, the SAC will decide the composition of the Appointments Committee.

In appointing members, the Appointments Committee will ensure the SAC reflects an appropriate gender (minimum 40% of any one gender), cultural, geographical and school type balance. The SAC will meet up to 4 times per year, generally once per term, by either face to face or virtual means. At least 1 meeting must be face to face and scheduled to coincide with either the annual School Sport or RSD Conferences. School Sport NZ will make all arrangements and cover all costs for meetings.

Nominations must be submitted using the electronic nomination form

HERE

Nominations must be completed no later than 5pm on Tuesday 30th  March.

NEW ZEALAND TEACHERS GAMES REGISTRATIONS CLOSING SOON!!

With just over a month to go until the New Zealand Teachers’ Games gets underway in Dunedin, the team down south are getting excited to host this event for the very first time. The games commence on Sunday 18 April and run through until Wednesday 21 April with 27 different sports and activities to choose from.

There is something on offer for everyone,  including the very popular Fastest Teacher, the Amazing Race  and the more competitive categories like netball and 3 x3 basketball.  For those who would prefer something less energetic you can try croquet, a fun target games evening or petanque.  Interestingly the brewery tours have been very popular! Dunedin boasts some beautiful golf courses and with ambrose and stapleford both offered at  different times.

This is the opportunity for teachers to re-engage in the joy and value of sport but more importantly an opportunity to have some time out with colleagues and unwind from a busy term.  A reminder that schools can combine and this is open to everyone on the payroll at early learning, primary, intermediate or secondary schools.  Registrations are going strong so be quick so as you don’t miss out as many sports have a limit and it will be first in first served.

The last day for registrations is Monday 29th March which is fast approaching.   We are looking forward to seeing you in Dunedin soon.
