Winter Tournament Week

After a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19, there is great excitement as we approach the Secondary School Winter Tournament Week. There will be 91 events and tournaments staged across New Zealand between Saturday 27 August – Sunday 4 September. Event providers have been working tirelessly to make sure that rangatahi will have a quality experience whilst representing their school.

As we look forward with anticipation, it is pertinent to remember we are still in the middle of a pandemic, and we urge schools who are travelling to events to ensure their Health and Safety documentation is up to date with clear policies regarding Covid-19 based on the most up to date Ministry of Health Guidelines. These policies should include:

  1. Isolation procedures should a student, staff member or coach test positive during the event or be considered a household contact Household Contacts | Unite against COVID-19 (covid19.govt.nz)
  2. Travel plans for students, staff members and coaches to return home safely should they test positive.
  3. RAT testing procedures and policies (before and during an event).
  4. Face covering policy/recommendations.

Currently we are in the orange setting of the Covid 19 Protection Framework.

  1. There will be no limit for outdoor gatherings.
  2. There will be no limit for indoor gatherings.
  3. You do not need to wear a face mask outdoors.
  4. Other face mask rules remain unchanged
  5. There is no requirement to scan in or for a business to display a QR code poster or have mandatory record keeping.

Please refer the Ministry of Health Website for further information Ministry of Health NZ

Keeping rangatahi, staff and team management safe is paramount to School Sport New Zealand and the event providers we partner with.   We encourage everyone to play their part to minimise the risk of transmission whilst allowing everyone to enjoy their time away at their respective competitions.

Secondary School Sport Conference

Interest for the Secondary School Sport Conference have been outstanding with just over 270 registrations from the deep south to the far north to date.  Due to Covid-19 there has not been a face to face to conference for two years and the number of registrations confirm the desire for school sport staff to come together for quality professional development and networking.

The 2022 National Secondary Schools Sports Conference is the premier professional development opportunity for school principals, senior management, and school sport personnel in NZ. The conference will build your knowledge and understanding of quality sport opportunities for secondary school students, particularly those that are less active, through a series of workshops and presentations, keynote speakers, and trade displays from a variety of businesses and organisations that provide services and products to schools.

The conference is jointly organised and hosted by Sport New Zealand and School Sport New Zealand and will be held at the Sky Stadium, Wellington 22nd and 23rd September 2022. The ‘Early Bird’ registration closes on 29 August with conference registrations closing on 9 September.
